General information about iron

The ferrous metal iron

Iron (abbreviation Fe, specific weight 7.87, melting point 1535˚C) is strongly magnetic, grey, heavy and oxidises quickly, which gives a red brown colour. Iron is difficult to melt, which explains why it was first used in the iron age.

Nowadays iron is the most widely used metal in the world (approx. 1,000 million tons). It is a material that possesses several good qualities, especially in the form of steel (iron without part of the carbon content).

Iron is relatively cheap, easy to roll, toughenable, malleable, deformable, resilient, easy to varnish and easy to protect from corrosion. Furthermore, iron can be used in alloys, for example as the main element in stainless steel.
