General information about stainless steel

Stainless steel

Stainless steel, also known as inox, is not magnetic and an alloy of iron, chrome, nickel and carbon dioxide. Stainless steel consists of at least 11-12% chrome and at most 1.2% carbon dioxide. The elements molybdenum, titanium, manganese, nitrogen and silicon are frequently found in stainless steel. In 1913, Harry Brearley casted stainless steel at the Brown-Firth laboratory for the first time, as part of a research project fort he weapons industry. The magnetic properties of stainless steel are based on its crystalline structure, i.e. the composition of the rvs type.

Stainless steel types and price setting

There are different types of stainless steel, for example:

  • AISI 304 (also known as inox 18/8) consists of 18% chrome and 8% nickel. This steel is often used because of its heat resistance up to 400°C. The alloy becomes slightly magnetic by cold deformation. It is easy to weld.
  • AISI 316 (EN 1.4401) is more resistant to corrosion and more expensive. It contains 16% chrome, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. Type 316 is more resistant to salt corrosion and is mainly used in the chemical industry.
  • 316L (“L” is for “low carbon”) has a low carbon dioxide percentage and is thus easier to weld. Corrosion resistance after welding is good.

We base our scrap stainless steel buy and purchase prices on the LME courses of nickel and iron.
