General information about zinc

Zinc (abbreviation Zn, specific weight 7.1, melting point 419˚C) is blueish/grey, heavy, durable and has a natural look. Zinc is an essential element in the human body and in other living organisms.

Zinc applications

For centuries, man has been using zinc for roof covering and drainage systems. Nowadays, zinc is often used to protect steel from corrosion (galvanisation). It is also used in Zamac (alloys using zinc as base), which is used in car industry parts and household appliances. Furthermore, zinc is used in several alloys such as brass (yellow copper), bronze and in paint and pharmaceutical products. Zinc is a frequently used product worldwide, as is lead: more than 5 million tons per year.

Zinc recycling and scrap zinc price determination

Zinc can be easily recycled from galvanisation residue and scrap zinc, which is released during roof demolition or replacement. The remelting point of zinc is relatively low (30%), because when galvanized steel and zinc-containing alloys are remelted, a great deal of zinc is lost.

It does not affect the importance of zinc recycling. One zinc melter is located In the Netherlands (Nyrstar in Budel), however, remelting zinc is done abroad. Large concentrations of zinc can be hazardous to the environment.

Our scrap zinc price and zinc purchase/selling prices are based on the LME course.
